Square Enix CEO: Final Fantasy VII Remake & Kingdom Hearts III to launch “in the next 3 years”

Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III will launch within the next three years, according to Square Enix president and CEO Yosuke Matsuda.

In an outline of Square Enix’s financial briefings for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2017, Matsuda said about the following slide: “This slide shows our release line-up for FY2017/3 as well as for FY2018/3 and beyond. We plan to launch each of these upcoming titles in the next three years or so.

That would mean both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III will be released by 2020. The former was first announced at E3 2015, and the former at E3 2013. Both are still without a narrower release window.

Square Enix first announced the Final Fantasy VII remake in 2015 and the Kingdom Hearts III game in 2013. The official Twitter accounts for the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises revealed new screenshots for both games in February.

Tetsuya Nomura is returning to the Final Fantasy VII PlayStation 4 remake game as its director after serving as the character designer for the original game, and Kazushige Nojima is also returning to write the scenario.

Kingdom Hearts III is slated for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. Epic Games is assisting with the game's development, using Unreal Engine4. The game's confirmed new worlds so far include Tangledand Big Hero 6, and the returning Olympus Coliseum world.

Square Enix Holdings' consolidated financial results reported earlier this month record-high net sales, operating income, and ordinary income for the fiscal year 2017.
