PlayStation 3 production ended in Japan

PlayStation 3 first launched in November 2006.
PlayStation 3 production has ended in Japan, the official Japanese PlayStation website revealed. The page for the 500 gigabyte standard model, the only remaining PlayStation 3 model in production in Japan, lists shipments as “ended.”

As of last week, Sony's official product page for its last Japanese PlayStation 3 console model reports that shipments have ended. The PlayStation 3 console is also no longer listed in the Japanese PlayStation website's main menu or Sony Store, although both still list PlayStation 3 software titles. Several major retailers in Japan such as Bic Camera, Sofmap, and Yodobashi also no longer list new units of the console in stock.

The first PlayStation 3 consoles shipped in 2006. The most recent slim model launched in Japan in August 2014, replacing a model that launched in 2013. The same page for the last Japanese PlayStation 3 console had listedshipments as ending soon in March.

As of Tuesday, the most recent PlayStation 3 games listed on the Japanese PlayStation website are Shōjo to Dragon Genjū Keiyaku Cryptract and Jikkyō Season no Powerful Pro Yakyū Championship 2017 — two free-to-download titles that debuted on May 25.
